Grinding mill Schwerin

Die Schleifmühle Schwerin

Hands-on industrial culture: the old grinding mill of the Herzogshof

The old grinding mill Schwerin acted as a private production centre for the Herzogshof Schwerin, located in Schwerin Castle. Here magnificent floors and artworks of stone and gemstones were made, which were used at the court. Situated on the edge of the feudal castle park of Schwerin Castle, the restored and still functional grinding mill is today only used for museum purposes.

In addition to the impressive architecture and technology of the old grinding mill, visitors can inform themselves here extensively about stone cutting and stone grinding and simply be amazed. When a stone becomes a work of art, which is formed by centuries old technology, every visitor is enthusiastic. Mother Nature shows her strength and creates something new with the technical sophistication of the grinding mill. Furthermore, the old grinding mill Schwerin deals with the life conditions of the grinding mills and day labourers. An interesting addition that gives you an insight into life at court.  The Museum Schleifmühle Schwerin is open from March-October Monday-Sunday 10-17 o’clock.

In addition to the impressive stone objects for the Duke’s Court and other clients, small, beautiful pieces of jewellery made of minerals and semi-precious stones have also been produced in the old grinding mill since the end of the 18th century. You can admire some of these jewellery exhibits in the exhibition.

Reppiner Castle

Reppiner Burgruine

Reppiner Burg: Neo-Romantic meets Neo-Gothic with panoramic view

The Reppiner Burg is a castle tower ruin artificially built in 1907, which primarily serves as a vantage point and excursion destination on the southern shore of Lake Schwerin. Even today it is a popular destination for excursions and offers a panoramic view of Lake Schwerin, the two islands Kaninchenwerder and Ziegelwerder as well as the silhouette of the city of Schwerin.

Below the castle there is a natural bathing place: here you can refresh yourself after an extensive walk to the Reppiner castle in the cool wet and bathe with the whole family.

In the shade of the castle tower you can also endure the summer. Therefore you should build the Reppiner Castle on your hiking tour or your walk. The Reppiner Burg also offers exciting panoramas and motifs for photographers.

Wiligrad Castle

Schloss Wiligrad

Neorenaissance in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Wiligrad Castle

Wiligrad Castle is the former ducal residence castle, which majestically sits on a picturesque steep bank overlooking Lake Schwerin. Today the local art association finds its premises here and offers visitors a truly wonderful art exhibition in the castle. A very special ambience!

But the castle has even more to offer. The extensive park is interspersed with very well preserved sculptures. Here, one quickly gets an insight into the contrast between the life of the duke and that of the common people. Also the nearby village Wiligrad is always worth a visit. But before you go for a leisurely walk into the village, you should definitely visit the nearby Hofgärtnerei, the local café. A real insider’s tip for all cake lovers.

Wiligrad Castle was built between 1896 and 1898 in neo-Renaissance style. The builder was Johan Albrecht (born 1857 – died 1920) – Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin & in these years Regent of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin representing the minor nephew Friedrich Franz IV. He called the castle Wiligrad (presumably “great castle”) because this is said to have been the name of the main castle of the Slavic princes in the 10th century.
